Balenciaga’s $1,500 layered cap prompts millennial fashionistas: ‘My culture is not your suit’

More like a stylist.

Balenciaga is being mocked for selling a colorful machine at exorbitant prices—reminiscent of the casual, early 2000s style that continues to haunt millennial fashionistas.

The design combines several materials stitched together to give the illusion of a few lacy tank tops layered on top of each other – pink, printed blue and white.

The stretchy tank is being sold by the brand for a whopping $1,150 — and is already going for $1,490 on third-party sites.

The look was popular in the early years, often seen on Disney Channel red carpets – usually put together using cheap T-shirts from well-known retailers such as Abercombie & Fitch and the now-defunct Limited Too.

The styles of the era have been making a resurgence lately—skinny jeans are back, and so is the layered tank apparently, whether millennials are ready or not.

“What is this in Laguna Beach?” Content creator Erin Miller joked in a TikTok video of the expensive shirt, referencing the iconic 2004 reality TV show.

“My culture is not your suit, Balenciaga,” someone joked.

Some passionate designers also noticed that Balenciaga’s layering technique was all wrong.

“We would never put the white tank on top!? This is the bottom part of the accent and everyone knows it!’” one person commented.

“Choosing white as a top layer is diabolical!” another agreed: “Screaming in millennial misery.”

And while the shirt may rub off on the nostalgia of some, the price tag seems off-putting to most.

“I’ve had all three of these shirts in my drawer since 2002. Total cost – $6,” someone commented.

“I like it but I’d rather do it myself for $10, how is it legal to pay that much for this,” said another along the same lines.

The shirts are currently only available for pre-order, which will ship at the end of October – so we’ll see who actually made the cut later this fall.

The top was released as part of the Winter 2024 collection alongside other similarly layered styles.

The luxe looks are the latest in a series of expensive takes on cheap and nostalgic items from the fashion house.

The Raver Used Bracelet — a fake, “worn and worn” wristband from a fictional festival sold for $3,800 — also earned them plenty of scorn.

“Gone, it seems, are the days of earning your festival stripes through actual experiences,” sniffed one critic.

Other eyebrow-raisers have included a Balenciaga lunch box, as well as an $1,800 handbag that resembles a plastic bag of potato chips.
